A Wine Odyssey: the history of the wines of Provence, the French Riviera, and the Rhône Valley

The story of wine in Provence begins over two thousand, six hundred years ago, when the Ancient Greek settlers, arriving at Massalia (today's Marseille), planted the first vines on these sun-drenched lands. The Romans, captivated by these Mediterranean wines, expanded the vineyards and made Provence a major wine region of the Empire. During the Middle Ages, monasteries preserved this heritage, while the Counts of Provence jealously protected these precious crops. After the devastation of phylloxera and the upheavals of the 19th century, Provence was reborn in the 20th century as the undisputed kingdom of rosé, combining freshness and elegance.

Further north, the Rhône Valley writes its own legend. Since ancient times, the Romans, and later the Popes of Avignon in the Middle Ages, recognized the richness of its terroirs. The wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Hermitage, and Côte-Rôtie became prized treasures, celebrated in royal courts. In the 17th and 18th centuries, their reputation grew, and the advent of appellations d’origine contrôlée in the 20th century firmly established their excellence.

Today, these two regions, steeped in history and passion, continue to captivate.
